Science & the Sludge Industry

Basic elementary principles: what goes up, must come down - what goes in, must come out. Throughout history, science has proven a useful tool for both the masses and the masters. History repeats itself - the new 'snake oil salesman', promising that the dangerous elixir of sewage sludge as a magic fertilizer that improves soil, grows crops and helps farmers completely disregards the obvious dangers of combining human manure, pathogens, heavy metals, bacteria and toxic chemicals. This 'poo-voo-doo' is a legal loophole for businesses, industries and municipalities to transfer their toxic waste to the communities that grow our food and harbor our water, completely disregarding America's health and safety now and in the future. It's that simple: if you pour toxic waste down the drain, it will concentrate into the sewage sludge.

The struggle of prostituting science, bureaucracy and political powers to serve business interests over community interests is perpetual. Can scientific studies and outcomes be 'purchased'? Certainly. Industries pay for studies to 'prove' their product is safe or tweak the facts to mask know dangers - think of the happy campaigns that promoted cigarette smoking, lead paint, Love Canal and a litany of pharmaceutical pills and procedures that ultimately proved dangerous and deadly. Next on the 'what-were-they-thinking' list of historical mistakes will surely be land applying sewage sludge where we eat.
